Live/Competition Brief - Introduction

Today in this lecture we were given feedback on how the assessments from our previous project that we had just completed for our first project at university. We were told that overall that the assessment went really well, however there were a few pointers that we needed to consider for our next brief, which was to make sure that the document, which contained our research, ideas and development in was landscape. we were also told that it was very important to consider was where we placed the design in the document, as the design should stand out. However I always place my design towards the end because I find that I want to show the research that I have done before hand and the ideas and development that I did before getting to my final design. We told that this was very important to consider because we needed to make sure that the designs that we created were seen by the company or target audience that we were aiming towards, so that it would stand out and be easy to see by the target audience that I was aiming the design at.

The brief that were set in this lecture was to look at two different design competitions, which were YCN and RSA. When we were shown these design competitions, I was very intergued by what the briefs and companies would be taking part in these design competitions. I then found out that there were 16 Briefs for the YCN competition, the deadline for this is 23rd March 2017 and there were 12 Briefs for the RSA competition, which had a deadline of 8th March 2017. This meant that there was 28 Briefs overall that I could choose from to look at for my next project, I thought that this was very interesting because I thought that it had a good variety of briefs that I could look at expanding and looking at for my project. I was really excited to look at the briefs and I had done a YCN brief before, whilst in college but hadn't actually taken part in the design competition. I thought that this competitiom will help me to boarden and develop on the skills that I have already learnt and need improving on. The deadline for this project though that we have been given at University will run up until chritsmas, however we could still work on it after christmas. Although we were advised that it would best round it off by christmas, as we will be set more briefs before and after christmas.

To move forward in this project I need to look at all of the briefs and see, which of them interest me the most I can then look into them a lot further and start to create several different ideas for the briefs that I have chosen.

We then looked at a previous students work who was a YCN winner in 2013, that went to the University of Huddersfield known as Fung Yee Wai. She won the competition for the Fedrigoni brief. This brief focused on inspiring printers throughout the United Kingdom, to work with a wide variety of Fedrigoni paper that was on offer. I found her work very interesting, as she created different types of food from the different types of Fedrigoni paper that was on offer.

Another example that we looked at was Zaiul Haqu who was again from the University of Huddersfield, but was the winner of th RSA design awards in 2015. I found there work very interesting and very creative because I think that the animation which they have created is very bold and stand out and makes a statement about the message that they're trying to tell the world. I think that this is very important because you need to make sure that you can get your message across to the target audience because you want them to connect with them.

We then watched a short documentary, which was about RSA Design from the students point of view. Where they told there experience and stories about the process and winning the awards in the design competition. We were told that research is very important to work out the target audience that we will be aiming towards. I think that this will be a consideration when doing my project. We were also told that doing these competitions or winning them could boost our CV's, which would be a great advantage, however I do feel that there is a lot of competition out there.

To start off with for this Live Brief, we should start to look at three briefs one from the YCN and the other from the RSA and generate ideas, and moodboards of how I could develop my ideas even further. We will then be able to talk about them and look at them in more detail and see which of the three we would like to take forward further for our final design piece and enter into the live competitions that we have been told about.

I found that this lecture very useful and very exciting because I think a live brief will be a good opportunity to do. I am really looking forward to this project.

Tuesday 4th October 2016 - Studio Seminar 11:15 - 12:15

The first thing that we did was hand our print outs to the tutor, so that other people would be able to see what we would be doing for our project. Try and remove any blocks, so that you can go past the stumps and work towards our ideas. Don’t worry too much about the purpose at the moment, because it will come to you like that.

Do we need a research and development file?

I think that this important, however we were told to do this at the end because the project and final design is the most important thing to do. The InDesign document is the presentation, there should be a bit of research, evidence, development and final products. We then talked about what would happen if you were in the industry and how quickly you would have to create a final outcome.

I then was told feedback about the mood board that I handed in. Jay told me that it is a very interesting project that I have chose to do and that I should always consider layers for example the layers like my interest or things that make up me as individual. Like the music that I like, my favourite place, my home town that people won’t know about me and that makes me different.

I found that this seminar session was very useful to me because it allowed me to think about what I need and could do to expand this project even further.

First Studio Session, What is Cybernetics?

In this studio session, I found it hard to concentrate because I really didn't have the faintest idea what this brief was about. So at first I found it hard think about an idea for the studio brief that I had been given for my first project of second year. So the first thing that I decided to do in this studio session was to look up the terms that we had been given. I thought that this was the best start that I could do to find away to get an idea for this studio project.

What is Autopoiesis?

Autopoiesis means yourself, you as an individual. (Poiesis) is a Greek term that means the creation. Together it means Self Creation.

What is Network Self?

Network Self is an Identity, that is used to show you as a person through the internet or the use of different social medias.

What is Cybernetics?

Cybernetics is the self moving control system and science of communications that occur in both living things and machines.

What is Sociomaterial?

Sociomaterial is the way that sociology and technology interact with each other. For example, the way that political views or an acceptable language (behaviour), is displayed or presented through different types of media.

First Studio Seminar - 11:15 - 12:15

This was my first studio seminar of second year. I found that this session was ok because I still hadn't got an idea for my studio project. The first point that we looked at was how different are we from others, thinking about this point in more depth I think that this point is very interesting because people are very different to each other. We were then told that this year is very important and its about us as individuals, which got me thinking about the previous point that we had just thought about and what describes and features do we have as an individual and what makes us as an individual stand out from the other people. So what do I want to do? What sort of career path do I want to take after university. What area would I like to do?

We then looked at Autopoiesis, which is Self Making and re identifying myself, it means using different languages and self identity. After this we talked about the idea of yourself or self and how the world sees you or how you see the world, I thought that this was a very important point and we should always think about this point because it could mean that we see the world as we do, but other people see it very differently and we should always consider the different ways that we could design, to make it fit with the target audience that we are aiming it towards and make sure that it works.

Who are you? That is a very important question that we are going to be thinking about this year because we need to find out what sort of designer we are going to be. We were told that we should explore as many different styles as possible this year to help us narrow our choices of styles to see which we are good at and those that we aren't so good at. Another important point that we were given was to always use a sketchbook to do our ideas because they are very useful and finally document everything that was said because we will be able to look back at this.

I found that this seminar was good because it got me to think about what I could do for the brief that we had been given, as I was still stuck for an idea before this session. However I thought that I still needed extra help to work out what I should do?

Cybernetic Self Introduction

Within this lecture, the first thing that we were told about was to make sure that we used are blogs throughout the year because they're very important to do this year. As it is used to show our pieces of development and design work throughout second year. We need to make sure that we blog about everything, for example:
  • Theory as Practice
  • Studio
  • Process and Production
  • Lecture and Seminars
  • Work that we do at home to do with Studio Work
  • And finally the teachers, tutors and lecturers feedback is very important to blog about.
So if we speak to a member of staff, we need to always make some notes about the feedback that you're receiving, as this will become useful to look back at. It will also help you throughout your studio projects.

We then watched a video about the Jamison Family, who show there friends and us a guide to the internet. The video was called Early 1990's Internet Commercial, I found that this film was very interesting, but strange at the same time because it wasn't like anything that I had really watched before.

After this we were then given our first brief of Second Year, which is Cybernetic Self. It is a 4 week project, where we need to include Research, Development and the Actual Output. Once we had been told the name of our brief we were then told that we must always consider these three terms throughout this project. Non of them I had really of before, however I was intrigued to find out what they all meant. These were:
  • Autopoiesis
  • Sociomaterial
  • Network Self

Once we had looked at this, we then started to talk about self presentation, social connection and how people are branding themselves through social media. I found this part very interesting because this statement could mean many different points, it could mean that people use social media to show the world there design work. However, another point is Catfish which is people hiding and branding themselves as some that they're not. It could also be used to show people what interest you in the world, for example we use social media like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to show Friends, Family and the world about you.

We were then shown someone called Amalia Ulman, who is a fine art student that decided to explain a story that was made up through the form of photographs. She took 175 photos within 5 months. I thought that this very interesting and very creative.

Sociomaterial
  • People
  • Materials
  • Equipment
  • Institutions
  • Components
Autopoiesis - Its own processes.

We then watched a documentary called Foundational Principles Of Cybernetics. I found that this documentary was quite interesting and very informational, as it contained lots of facts about Cybernetics.

What defines us?

How does interaction with other affect that? Redefine the self portrait, the selfie.

Outcome
