Monday Morning Lecture - Week No. 28

Within this lecture we looked at the topic of Modernism and constructivism. Within this lecture we will also be looking into graphical imagery. We firstly watched a visual response from a film by Hitchcock called Psycho. Within this film the film had a weird visual, as it was hard to understand where the film was set. It is a powerful and nice type of film, I thought that this film was strange and quite hard to focus my eyes on because the film keep shuddering and skipping from two different versions of the film that had been created for this film. We then watched a calmer version of the two films mashed together from the two versions of the film ran side by side. On the left side you could see the Hitchcock version and on the right the Gus Van Sant. This is modernism film making against postmodernism film making. I thought that the second film that we were shown allowed me to understand what was being displayed on the screen a lot better than the first clip that we were shown.

We then talked about Periodisation. Periodisation is a simple process that is dividing an annual training plan into a set of manageable stages. After this we recapped on Modernism and Postmodernism. We then moved on to talk about Immanuel Kant about how he regularly thought about different points. Modernism introduces a crisis of representation, the style of a image that a camera is a straight of a representation using a grid. Invention of the camera but it is also a question of realistic science. We then looked at a piece of artwork by Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) de-FORM-ation. African Masks, Subject Matter (Prostitution) Violence to representation. Picasso wants to acknowledge this aspects of the world. This image isn’t unified as objects blend in with the background. There is an act of cubism as people can’t see this image from different angles.

Cubism – Simplification of Shapes/Planes. Multiple simultaneous Perspectives. Synthesis of space and figures. Synthesis of movement, Temporal distortion of figure. We then had to think about the video that we were shown in a couple of lecture ago were we watched the film that the camera zoomed out and zoomed in to our bodies. We looked at pieces of artwork, which were Analytical Cubism and Atypical- but still cubist. We then looked at the camera that is used within athletics to understand who has won a race. This is known as a Photo Finish. Once we had done this we then looked at Tension in Cezanne 1904, Find a unified field theory unedifying the variably of perception. 1904. Inherit variability of effects of motif.  We then see a tendency towards abstraction, as artists start to remove things and they start to think about more simplified representation. You have to try and find new ways to be an artist. Piece of work that we have looked at today has all used a piece of representation and has tried to find a new way to be shown. Early modernism of representation is shown entirely different to now.

How do we think about Cultural Diversity?

Within this lecture, we focused our attention on the designer Tracey Moffatt that had created Something more I in 1989. We then looked that since the 1970's the white western cultural side had been challenged from the various ideological positions of difference. We then had to think about considering what where when we represent ourselves and that examines the cultural difference, otherness and representation.

We firstly watched a film called Night Cries by Tracey Moffatt who started out as a photographer. The film started out with screams, my first impression of this film got me to think about a horror movie, which I thought the film was going to be. The film that we watched was a short drama. Within the film the main character remembered thoughts about when she was younger, I found that this was very strange and I wasn't sure what to make from it. The main character was under a lot of stress, I felt that it showed me that she wasn't copying to look after the older women. I found that part of the film was very upsetting; as it felt that lots of emotion were displayed by the young women when the old lady died.

I found out from this film that it was made in Australia, it shows us the relationship between Britain and Australia. How Britain invaded Australia when no one was living there. The younger person is looking after the older person in the film. The film is also about a mother and daughter that has been left miles and miles away from the nearest town, they were stranded which explains the train tracks within the film.

After we had looked at the film we then looked at the director of the film, who was Tracey Moffatt. I found out that she was born in 1960 in Brisbane, Australia. She attended the University of Queensland in 1982 and has produces narratives, stills and movies. Something more I, was one of the first pieces that she had created to go on exhibition.

Stolen Generation

Britain had a policy to breed out aboriginal's, if you were in your 7th / 8th generation you wouldn't qualify and children after the 6th generation would be taken away from their families and placed with families that's isn't theirs. In 1970's the children would be placed with foster families or orphanages, however this situation got very bad. This is the basic background for the story of Something More I. Something More I was about aboriginal deaths and custody.

The main character in Night Cries was portrayed by Marcia Langton, she said that the children were taken away from there aboriginal family and placed with a white person to make them feel like they have no one else to look after them and feel like they had no one left. This was what the film Night Cries was based around. When Queen Elizabeth became queen she went on a tour around the commonwealth, where she went to Australia and met Albert Namatjira, who was jailed for six months for supplying aboriginal families with alcohol.

Marcia Langton was Australian who studied aboriginal studies and was the foundation chair. She also attended the University of Melbourne.

I found that this lecture was good and very different, as I learnt quite a lot within this lecture about history.

How do we think about Culture and Representation?

In this Lecture we talked about how we thought about culture and representation. We started off by talking about what culture was. We said that culture is the way that people live their everyday life and the way people live in there hometown. Culture can be represented at the National Gallery, The British Museum, Design Museum and Tate Modern. We then talked about Raymond Williams who was a novelist that wrote several books in his time from "Culture and Society", "The Long Revolution", "The Country and the city", Keywords and "Television: Technology and Cultural Form". We found a interesting point that was said by Raymond Williams, which was culture is ordinary: that is the first fact. I think that I agree with this because culture is just a way of life, it is nothing unusual, it just ordinary and the same as everywhere in the world.

After this we then talked about Representation, which is one of the central practices, that produce culture. Once we had looked at these two terms, we then looked at the topics in more depth. I thought that this lecture was very helpful and useful, as I can always relate back to these lecture in the future when I am designing my own work for different projects.

Typography Drawing

What I Did In This Lesson

Within this process and production lesson, we were given the task of creating several different typefaces for the letters "A I N E G". I found that this task was very fun and exciting because it allowed me to produce the letters in different styles that I haven't tried before. This task allowed me to experiment and learn new techniques about drawing and how I could could look at new font styles that I don't normally use within my work.

The Process

To create several different typefaces, I had to use paper and different materials to experiment with styles even further. The materials that I used to create the typefaces were Pens, a Fine liner and Pencils. I found that this materials allowed me to experiment with the design, this meant that the font styles allowed me to improve my skills even further.

What I Like

My favourite part about this process and production was the font types that I had created because I was able to look into new font types that I haven't used before. This allowed me to look at the font styles even further and expand on my skills more than I have done before.

What I Didn't Like

What I didn't like about this process and production lesson is that towards the end of the lesson, I wasn't sure about other ideas to produce for different typefaces because I found it quite hard to think about different idea.

Adobe Illustrator

 What we did

In this process and production lesson we were set several tasks, which were very interesting. Within this lesson, we told the basics of Illustrator I had basic knowledge of this as I am quite used to using the programme Adobe Illustrator. However, I found this a good task because I was able to learn new skills to expand my knowledge.

The Process

To create these tasks I used the programme Adobe Illustrator. The first task that I was given was to find a photograph of a celebrity and trace around the celebrity using the pen tool. The celebrity that I chose to use for this task was Ed Westwick who plays Chuck Bass in the tv show known as Gossip Girl. I found this task was quite easy because I found the pen tool quite easy to use, within the software. After this I had download an app onto my phone called Adobe Capture. I found this programme quite hard to use at first because I wasn't sure how to use the app, however I am now getting used to it. This app changes the photograph or sketch from real life to a vector image, which I think is quite creative. I then experimented with the image by changing the colour of the designs using the colour scheme that I had created within the app. After this we then moved onto our final task where we had to find a sports photograph that we wanted to use for a poster design, once I had chosen a photograph I then added a effect to the design, which vectorised the image even further. I then added type to the design, I used the font style Caflisch Script Pro, I used this font style because I thought that the font style was very creative and stylish. I also thought that the font style was very simple, but very fancy. I then added a little copyright symbol to my design, just above the text that I had placed onto the poster.

What I Like

My favourite part about this process and production lesson was the dancer photograph that I was able to edit into a vector that I could use for my piece that I was creating in Adobe Photoshop. I think that this was very different to what I had created before, I found this part very fun and exciting, as it was something different that what I have created.

What I Didn't Like

What I didn't like about this process and production lesson was that I kept getting lost, as I didn't understand what we had to do. However in the end I did work everything out, so my design wasn't very professional and was slightly messy, but overall I am pleased how it turned out in the end.

Adobe Photoshop

What I did in this lesson?

In this Process and Production lesson, I was given the task edit a photograph of a cityscape scene using the programme Adobe Photoshop. I understand Adobe Photoshop quite well, so some of the tools that we used in this programme, I was quite familiar some of these tools. Another part that we did in this lesson was to create a visual piece using two curved lines that I had created using the pen tool. I thought this lesson was quite fun.

The Process

To create the edits of the cityscape photograph, I used the programme Adobe Photoshop. The tools that I used to change the photograph was the enhance tool, which changes the brightness and intensity of the colours within the design. I found that this process was quite fun because it allowed me to see how the photograph would look if the design was edited using different tools. Within the lesson we also look at all of the different tools that we could use within photoshop to edit the photo or to even use generally for my own designs. Whilst doing this I noticed that I hadn't used some of the tools before. I used the programme Adobe Illustrator to create the curved line experiment. To create this I use the pen tool to create two separate swirly lines, where I then used the option object > blend > blend options and selected the Specified step option, then clicked ok. I then had to select the option blend > make for the design to work correctly.

What I like

My favourite part about this Process and Production lesson was learning about and using tools, that I hadn't really used before because it allowed me to expand on my skills within photoshop, which I will be able to use in the future. I think that this will help me to make my designs better and more professional than they already are.

What I Didn't Like

The part that I didn't like about my designs was the line design because I feel that I could have been a little more creative with how the design were displayed, so that when I took the design into Adobe Illustrator. I would be able to create a more creative and funky Illustration. Another reason for this would be that the people who look at my design would be a lot more interested in the design, if it was more creative overall.

The final task that we were given in this lesson was to edit a final photograph of our self using some of the tools that we had learnt whilst in this lesson. Once I chose a photograph of myself, I had to decided how I wanted to edit the photograph even further my changing the design from an original image to a vectorised design. I think that after editing the photograph even further, I was quite proud of the design because I found that the design was very creative. To edit my photograph I decided to use the programme Adobe Photoshop, to edit the photograph from a colour photo to a black and white photograph. To add this effect to the design I used the option Image > Adjustments > Black and White. I then had to add another effect to the photograph using the posterize option, which can be found under Image > Adjustments > Posterize, I think that this was a very creative process because it allowed me to change the photograph from a real life photo to a vector image. After using this process, I think that the design reminded me of a Pop Art design that I have seen before. To develop the design even further, I decided to add a colour to the design to brighten up the design, I think that the design looked very interesting, I was quite proud of how the design the design had been created within the software. The colour that I decided to change my design to was the colour red, I chose this colour because I think that this colour is very bright and vibrant, which I think is very important as you need to use bright and vibrant colour to make the target audience very interested in the design that you have created.
