Style

Style

What is style?

Style is the way that you work, in my opinion I think that style is way that you create your design work in a particular way.

What makes up style?

We then watched a short clip called On clothing and Style by Cornel West. Within the film there was a lot of focus of clothes and that style that is being used, they focused on the style of clothing that people were wearing. An interesting point in the film he said style was a fusion between different people, also if different people wore the same clothes as each other there wouldn't be the same effect.

Truman Capote claimed in interview that style is the "mirror of an artist's sensibility - more so than the content of his work' (1958)

We then found out that style and content were two separate things.  We then wondered about if there would be content without style and can one act outside of style.

We then looked at an Modernist Architect and designer called Marcel Breuer that worked in Mid 20's.

He believed in the "Purposeful construction of logical designed objects"
breuer uses " stylessness" as an insturment of "logical problem solving"
design is the manifestation and consideration of significances, not problem solving.

Antipathy means a strong dislike. for this definition we looked at a famous quote from sontag.

There are styles and more styles, and beyond that. We then talked about an anti fashion called normcore.

Structuring Style

A style is a class
the class is made up of a set of attributes
these attributes can flow between different styles
as such style mature and change over time

We then looked at the structuring style in a simpler way, which I found easier to understand, as the structuring style was broken down in to simpler terms that were easier to follow, the structuring style was explaining a style like it was a box. For example inside the box are phenomena:

1. How you talk
2. How you walk
3. Products you buy
4. Principles of Interaction
5. Particular colours in your design
6. Character Animation Styles

My style means taking different elements from different design style and put them all together to create a brand new that is personal to us as designers.

How do styles operate?
I think they fade in out and because you can always get different styles that are new and inspirational, they also changes and fade in and out of your head, this is known for style which works on intensities. To think about this we looked at mountain like the different peaks that form the mountain. The peaks and troughs of the mountains explains that the dips in the mountain shows that the ideas from your head have faded out and the peaks represent fading in to the different styles that have interest you.

I found that this seminar really helped me to understand what style is like, also how the style I use sometimes changes because my ideas fade in and out of styles that I like to look at. We talked about how our work shouldn't be stylised in the first year because we should all be build up our own style by developing our ideas from different styles.
